[. . . ] OWNER'S MANUAL YZF-R1 5PW-28199-E1 EAU04575 INTRODUCTION Welcome to the Yamaha world of motorcycling!As the owner of the YZF-R1, you are benefiting from Yamaha's vast experience and newest technology regarding the design and manufacture of high-quality products, which have earned Yamaha a reputation for dependability. Please take the time to read this manual thoroughly, so as to enjoy all advantages of your YZF-R1. The owner's manual does not only instruct you in how to operate, inspect and maintain your motorcycle, but also in how to safeguard yourself and others from trouble and injury. [. . . ] NOTE: The engine oil should be between the minimum and maximum level marks. _ 4. If the engine oil is at or below the minimum level mark, add sufficient oil of the recommended type to raise it to the correct level. 6-9 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR To change the engine oil (with or without oil filter cartridge replacement) 1. Start the engine, warm it up for several minutes, and then turn it off. Remove the engine oil filler cap and drain bolt to drain the oil from the crankcase. NOTE: Skip steps 5­7 if the oil filter cartridge is not being replaced. _ _ 1. NOTE: An oil filter wrench is available at a Yamaha dealer. _ _ 6 6-10 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR Tightening torque: Engine oil drain bolt: 43 Nm (4. 3 m·kgf) 9. Add the specified amount of the recommended engine oil, and then install and tighten the oil filler cap. 1. Apply a thin coat of engine oil to the O-ring of the new oil filter cartridge. Install the new oil filter cartridge, and then tighten it to the specified torque with a torque wrench. Install the engine oil drain bolt, and then tighten it to the specified torque. NOTE: Check the washer for damage and replace it if necessary. _ _ Recommended engine oil: See page 8-1. Oil quantity: Without oil filter cartridge replacement: 2. 9 L With oil filter cartridge replacement: 3. 1 L Total amount (dry engine): 3. 8 L 6-11 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR ECA00133 EC000067 _ CAUTION: G In order to prevent clutch slippage (since the engine oil also lubricates the clutch), do not mix any chemical additives. Do not use oils with a diesel specification of "CD" or oils of a higher quality than specified. In addition, do not use oils labeled "ENERGY CONSERVING II" or higher. G Make sure that no foreign material enters the crankcase. CAUTION: If the oil level warning light flickers or remains on, immediately turn the engine off and have a Yamaha dealer check the vehicle. _ _ 11. Turn the engine off, and then check the oil level and correct it if necessary. Start the engine, and then let it idle for several minutes while checking it for oil leakage. If oil is leaking, immediately turn the engine off and check for the cause. NOTE: After the engine is started, the engine oil level warning light should go off if the oil level is sufficient. _ _ 6 6-12 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR EAU04897 Coolant The coolant level should be checked before each ride. In addition, the coolant must be changed at the intervals specified in the periodic maintenance and lubrication chart. Place the motorcycle on a level surface and hold it in an upright position. NOTE: G The coolant level must be checked on a cold engine since the level varies with engine temperature.
