[. . . ] Please take the time to read this manual thoroughly, so as to enjoy all advantages of your FJR1300/FJR1300A. The owner's manual does not only instruct you in how to operate, inspect and maintain your motorcycle, but also in how to safeguard yourself and others from trouble and injury. In addition, the many tips given in this manual will help keep your motorcycle in the best possible condition. If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to contact your Yamaha dealer. [. . . ] Neutral position G Shifting gears lets you control the amount of engine power available for starting off, accelerating, climbing hills, etc. NOTE: To shift the transmission into the neutral position, press the shift pedal down repeatedly until it reaches the end of its travel, and then slightly raise it. Even with the transmission in the neutral position, do not coast for long periods of time with the engine off, and do not tow the motorcycle for long distances. The transmission is properly lubricated only when the engine is running. Always use the clutch while changing gears to avoid damaging the engine, transmission, and drive train, which are not designed to withstand the shock of forced shifting. EAU32810 Recommended shift points (for Switzerland only) The recommended shift points during acceleration are shown in the table below. 5-2 OPERATION AND IMPORTANT RIDING POINTS EAU16810 EAU16841 Shift up points: 1st 2nd: 23 km/h (14 mi/h) 2nd 3rd: 36 km/h (22 mi/h) 3rd 4th: 50 km/h (31 mi/h) 4th 5th: 60 km/h (37 mi/h) Tips for reducing fuel consumption Fuel consumption depends largely on your riding style. Consider the following tips to reduce fuel consumption: G Shift up swiftly, and avoid high engine speeds during acceleration. G Do not rev the engine while shifting down, and avoid high engine speeds with no load on the engine. G Turn the engine off instead of letting it idle for an extended length of time (e. g. , in traffic jams, at traffic lights or at railroad crossings). Engine break-in There is never a more important period in the life of your engine than the period between 0 and 1600 km (1000 mi). Since the engine is brand new, do not put an excessive load on it for the first 1600 km (1000 mi). The various parts in the engine wear and polish themselves to the correct operating clearances. During this period, prolonged full-throttle operation or any condition that might result in engine overheating must be avoided. EAU17121 NOTE: When shifting down two gears at a time, reduce the speed accordingly [e. g. , down to 35 km/h (22 mi/h) when shifting from 4th to 2nd gear]. 5 01000 km (0600 mi) Avoid prolonged operation above 5000 r/min. 10001600 km (6001000 mi) Avoid prolonged operation above 6000 r/min. 5-3 OPERATION AND IMPORTANT RIDING POINTS ECA10331 EAU17211 CAUTION: After 1000 km (600 mi) of operation, the engine oil and final gear oil must be changed, and the oil filter cartridge or element replaced. · Every two years replace the internal components of the brake master cylinders and calipers as well as clutch master and release cylinders, and change the brake and clutch fluids. · Replace the brake and clutch hoses every four years and if cracked or damaged. 6-4 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR EAU18771 Removing and installing panels The panels shown need to be removed to perform some of the maintenance jobs described in this chapter.
