[. . . ] If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to contact your Yamaha dealer. So, remember to put safety first! IMPORTANT MANUAL INFORMATION Particularly important information is distinguished in this manual by the following notations: EAU00005 The Safety Alert Symbol means ATTENTION!Failure to follow WARNING instructions could result in severe injury or death to the motorcycle operator, a bystander or a person inspecting or repairing the motorcycle. CAUTION: A CAUTION indicates special precautions that must be taken to avoid damage to the motorcycle. A NOTE provides key information to make procedures easier or clearer. NOTE: l l This manual should be considered a permanent part of this motorcycle and should remain with it even if the motorcycle is subsequently sold. [. . . ] Refer to this section each time the panel has to be removed or installed. Panel A EAU02926 To remove 1. Remove the screws and slide it as shown to unhook it. 6-5 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR Do not attempt to diagnose such problems yourself. The spark plugs should be periodically removed and inspected because heat and deposits will cause any spark plug to slowly break down and erode. If electrode erosion becomes excessive, or if carbon and other deposits are excessive, the spark plug should be replaced with the specified plug. Specified spark plug: CR8E (NGK) or U24ESR-N(DENSO) Before installing any spark plug, measure the electrode gap with a wire thickness gauge and adjust it to specification. Install the seat. Spark plug inspection EAU01880 The spark plug is an important engine component and should be inspected periodically, preferably by a Yamaha dealer. The condition of the spark plug can indicate the condition of the engine. Normally, all spark plugs from the same engine should have the same color on the white insulator around the center electrode. The ideal color at this point is a medium-to-light tan color for a motorcycle that is being ridden normally. If one spark plug shows a distinctly different color, there could be something wrong with the engine. 6-6 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR When installing a spark plug, the gasket surface should always be cleaned and a new gasket used. Any grime should be wiped off from the threads and the spark plug tightened to the specified torque. Reassemble by reversing the removal procedure. EC000082 EC000095 5. Pull out the air filter. CAUTION: The carburetors were set at the Yamaha factory after many tests. If they are changed, poor engine performance and damage may result. CAUTION: l l Make sure the air filter is properly seated in the air filter case. Excessive piston and/or cylinder wear may result. 6-11 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR Standard idle speed: 1, 200 ~ 1, 300 r/min NOTE: If the specified idle speed cannot be obtained by performing the above adjustment, consult a Yamaha dealer. 1. Start the engine and warm it up for a few minutes at approximately 1, 000 to 2, 000 r/min. Set the idle to the specified engine speed by adjusting the throttle stop screw. Turn the screw in direction a to increase engine speed and in direction b to decrease engine speed. Throttle cable free play inspection There should be a free play of 3 ~ 5 mm at the throttle grip. If the free play is incorrect, ask a Yamaha dealer to make this adjustment. 6-12 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR Valve clearance adjustment EAU00637 The correct valve clearance changes with use, resulting in improper fuel/air supply or engine noise. This adjustment however, should be left to a professional Yamaha service technician. Tires EAU00647 To ensure maximum performance, long service, and safe operation, note the following: Tire air pressure Always check and adjust the tire pressure before operating the motorcycle. EW000082 Maximum load* Cold tire pressure Up to 90 kg* 90 kg load ~ Maximum load* High speed riding XJ600S: 184 kg XJ600N: 187 kg Front Rear 225 kPa 200 kPa (2. 00 kg/cm2, (2. 25 kg/cm2, 2. 00 bar) 2. 25 bar) 200 kPa 250 kPa (2. 00 kg/cm2, (2. 50 kg/cm2, 2. 00 bar) 2. 50 bar) 200 kPa 250 kPa (2. 00 kg/cm2, (2. 50 kg/cm2, 2. 00 bar) 2. 50 bar) Tire inflation pressure should be checked and adjusted when the temperature of the tire equals the ambient air temperature. Tire inflation pressure must be adjusted according to total weight of cargo, rider, passenger, and accessories (fairing, saddlebags, etc. if approved for this model), and vehicle speed. * Load is the total weight of cargo, rider, passenger and accessories. 6-13 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR EW000083 FRONT Proper loading of your motorcycle is important for several characteristics of your motorcycle, such as handling, braking, performance and safety.
