This model is the result of Yamaha's vast experience in the production of fine sporting, touring, and pacesetting racing machines. It represents the high degree of craftsmanship and reliability that have made Yamaha a leader in these fields. This manual will give you an understanding of the operation, inspection, and basic maintenance of this motorcycle. [. . . ] Spark plug gap Spark plug gap: 0. 6­0. 7 mm (0. 024­0. 028 in) Clean the surface of the spark plug gasket and its mating surface, and then wipe off any grime from the spark plug threads. Tightening torque: Spark plug: 17. 5 Nm (1. 75 m·kgf, 12. 5 ft·lbf) 2. Install the seat. PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR EAU19680 EAU32850 NOTE: If a torque wrench is not available when installing a spark plug, a good estimate of the correct torque is 1/4­1/2 turn past finger tight. However, the spark plug should be tightened to the specified torque as soon as possible. ECA10840 Canister (for California only) Engine oil and oil filter cartridge The engine oil level should be checked before each ride. In addition, the oil must be changed and the oil filter cartridge replaced at the intervals specified in the periodic maintenance and lubrication chart. Place the vehicle on a level surface and hold it in an upright position. NOTE: Make sure that the vehicle is positioned straight up when checking the oil level. Start the engine, warm it up for several minutes, and then turn it off. 6 CAUTION: Do not use any tools to remove or install the spark plug cap, otherwise the ignition coil coupler may get damaged. The spark plug cap may be difficult to remove because the rubber seal on the end of the cap fits tightly. To remove the spark plug cap, simply twist it back and forth while pulling it out; to install it, twist it back and forth while pushing it in. This model is equipped with a canister to prevent the discharging of fuel vapor into the atmosphere. Before operating this vehicle, make sure to check the following: G Check each hose connection. G Make sure that the canister breather is not blocked, and if necessary, clean it. 6-10 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR 4. Remove the engine oil dipstick and wipe it clean, insert it back into the hole (without screwing it in), and then remove it again to check the oil level. NOTE: The engine oil should be between the minimum and maximum level marks. If the engine oil is at or below the minimum level mark, remove the oil filler cap, and then add sufficient oil of the recommended type to raise it to the correct level. Insert and tighten the engine oil dipstick, and then install and tighten the oil filler cap. To change the engine oil (with or without oil filter cartridge replacement) 1. Start the engine, warm it up for several minutes, and then turn it off. Remove the engine oil filler cap and drain bolt to drain the oil from the crankcase. 1. Engine oil drain bolt NOTE: Skip steps 4­10 if the oil filter cartridge is not being replaced. Oil filter wrench PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR NOTE: An oil filter wrench is available at a Yamaha dealer. Apply a thin coat of engine oil to the O-ring of the new oil filter cartridge.
