The automatic air recircula tion system has an air qua lity sensor to d etect harmful gases in the outside air, in whic h case it will switch automatically to recirculation. When set to automa tic mode, the electronic air c onditioning system prov ides the op tim um settings under almost all conditions. The electronic air conditioning system is only fully operational when the engine is running. At low outsid e temperatures the cooling unit (cooling com pressor) switches off automatically. 167 If necessary, the pre-selected temperature can be set higher or lower. Different pre-selected tempera tures can be set for the driver and pa ssenger sides. Operation without cooling (Eco appears in the display) m ay imp air the level of comfort ­ see page 172. Autom atic air recircul ation mod e Air recirculation is automatically activated as soon as the system d etec ts harmful gases in the outside air. At low outsid e temperatures and with the cooling (cooling compressor) switched off, automatic recirculation operation will be disabled. S witc hing automatic recirc ulation on or off ­ see page 173. Autom atic m ode Basic setting for max imum comfort: z Press AUTO button. z Set the pre-selected tempera ture for the driv er and passenger sides to 22 °C using the turn knob s. Manual recircula tion operation ­ see pag e 174. 168 Pre-selected t em peratures Using the outer k nobs, p re-selected tem peratures can be set to values b etween 16 °C a nd 28 °C . For the sake of comfort, only change the pre -selected temperature in sm all steps. If a temperature below 16 °C is set, Lo appears in the display: the electronic air conditioning system runs consta ntly at max imum cooling power. If a temperature ab ov e 28 °C is set, Hi appears in the display: the electronic air conditioning system runs consta ntly at max imum heating power. The p reset temperatures a re retained when the ignition is switched off. If the preselected temp eratures for the driver's side and the passenger sid e are to be adjusted together, press rotary knob for driver's sid e. For reasons of com fort, the pre-selected temperatures c annot differ by m ore than 2 °C . Common setting for pre-selected temperature Press rotary knob at driver's side. Adjust preselected temperatures using rotary knob at driver's side. Individual setting for pre-selected temperature Press rotary knob at p assenger side. Adjust preselected temperatures ind ependently of each other using rotary knobs at driver's side and pa ssenger sid e. Both p reselec ted temperatures (d riv er's side and pa ssenger sid e) are shown in the display . 169 Air vents All air vents (except the rear air v ents 3) are controlled automatically in a utomatic mode. The airflow can be direc ted a s desired by adjusting the horiz ontal and vertica l adjustment wheels. To close vents turn the vertica l adjustment wheel fully downwards. The air vents are located to the left and rig ht of the instrument p anel, a bove the ra dio. Those for the rear passengers are loca ted in the centre console between the front seats. Ad ditional air outlets a re loca ted in front of the windscreen, in front of the door wind ow s a nd in the front and rear foot wells 3. Rear a ir vents 3 Depending upon the preset tempera ture, cooled , unheated or heated air will b e directed to the rea r seats through two vents. [. . . ] Further information ­ see pa ge 220. Tyre chains Restri ctions Ty re c hains may be used on the front wheels only. Alw ays use fine mesh chains that add no more than 15 m m to the ty re tread and the inboard sides (including chain lock). Snow chains are not permitted on the temporary spare wheel 3 115/70 R 16 and tyre sizes 215/50 R 17, 225/45 R 17 and 225/45 R 18. Further inform ation ­ see page 223.
