[. . . ] · When you turn On your MHS350 for the first time after purchasing, it is automatically tuned to channel 16, the United States Coast Guard frequency for distress, safety, and calling. From the second time, the radio turned to the channel which was selected before you turn off the radio. · When you press any button (except PTT), a short tone sounds. Turning On the Unit and Setting Squelch 1 Before you turn On the unit, turn the squelch (SQ) knob fully counterclockwise. 2 Then, turn On the unit by turning the Volume/Power (VOL) knob clockwise until you hear a hissing sound. 3 Turn the SQ knob clockwise, just until the hissing sound stops. Think of the squelch control as a frequency gate which controls access to weak or strong signals depending on its setting. Strong Signals Medium Signals Weak Signals Noise · To listen to a weak or distant station, turn the knob counterclockwise. If reception is poor, turn it clockwise to cut out weak transmissions. If the NOAA issues warning while this feature is turned On, the radio sounds an alert tone. You can set this feature on both marine channel or weather channel. 1 To use Emergency/Weather Alert, select the emergency/weather channel in your area (see page 14). 2 Press and hold the WX/ALERT button for 2 seconds. A double confirmation tone sounds and appears. 3 When the unit receives a warning signal, it beeps for 5 seconds. and the chan- 4 To turn Off Emergency/Weather Alert, press and hold the WX/ALERT button for 2 seconds. · When Emergency/Weather Alert is activated, the highest priority is given this function. If the unit is in Scan, Triple Watch, or any other marine channels, it checks the weather alert signals every 7 seconds and switches to the warning receive mode automatically. 15 UT919ZH(MHS350)ENG. QX 2/16/04 10:14 AM Page 16 SAME Alert SAME (Specific Area Message Encoding) alert function as a severe weather and emergency warning like Emergency/Weather alert (see page 15). But SAME allows you to receive, interpret, and display the information about the code so you can determine if the emergency might affect your area. This can be set only on weather channel. 1 Press the WX/ALERT button, then press and hold the WX/ALERT button for 2 seconds. A double confirmation tone sounds, and you can see WX and indicators. 2 When the unit receives a warning signal, WX and blinks. Also you hear an alert tone corresponding to the alert level (There are 4 levels; A1-Warning, A2-Watch, A3-Statement and A4-Test). 3 To turn Off SAME Alert, press and hold the WX/ALERT button for two seconds. FIPS Code The 6-digit Federal Information Processing System (FIPS) code was established by the National Weather Service (NWS) identifies geographic areas in the United Sates. FIPS code allows you to receive only the SAME alert occurring in a particular area. To obtain the FIPS code for a particular area, contact the NWS tall free at 1-888-NWR-SAME (1-888-697-7263). QX 2/16/04 10:15 AM Page 17 To store the FIPS code: 1 Press and hold the MEM/FIPS key for 2 seconds. 2 Select the location number from 01 to 15 by pressing the L or M button. 3 Press the MEM/FIPS button. 4 Now enter the FIPS code. Press the L or M button to select the number from 1 to 9. The number will be entered when MEM/FIPS is pressed, and the blinking digit moves to the right. When you enter the last digit, the confirmation screen appears. USA, International and Canadian Channels 1 The MHS350 is initially set for USA marine channels when you turn On your radio. 2 To listen to international marine channels, press the UIC button once. INT appears on the display. 3 To listen to Canadian marine channels, press the UIC button again. CAN appears on the display. 4 The radio will keep the last mode setting that was selected when turned back On. If a damaged antenna comes into contact with the skin, a minor burn may result. Body-worn Operation This device was tested for typical body-worn operations using the supplied belt-clip.
