[. . . ] Audio Accessories: Do not operate the radio with audio accessories at high volume levels. If you experience a ringing in your ears, reduce the volume level or discontinue use. Always make sure the radio is turned off before plugging audio accessories into the accessory jack. Under certain conditions, radios can interfere with blasting operations and may cause an explosion. [. . . ] Make sure your radio is off. Do not mix old and new batteries to avoid damage to the unit. 2. Insert 3 AA batteries according to the polarity symbols on the inside of the battery compartment. 4 4. Replace the battery cover by pushing it up until it is secure, then latch the clip in place. Low Battery Alert The LCD on your radio shows a battery meter in the upper right corner. When the batteries in the unit are low, the unit will emit a chirping sound. 5 Belt Clip Installation Because you will most likely use your radio when you are out and about, the unit comes equipped with a belt clip to securely fasten the unit to your belt, pocket or purse. Align the screw with the hole on the back of the radio and turn it clockwise, using a Phillips screwdriver to secure the belt clip. The belt clip can be attached so that it rests vertically or horizontally. Turn the screw counterclockwise to loosen the belt clip and change its position. Attaching the Hand Strap The hand strap for the FRS radio can be attached to the belt clip for added transporting convenience. Simply thread the long end of the hand strap through the hole on the belt clip, then loop the long end through the short end and pull tight. 7 Using Your Radio In order to get the most out of your new radio, read this reference guide completely before attempting to operate the unit. Turning the Radio On 1. Turn the control counterclockwise to turn the unit off. 8 Adjusting the Volume 1. Turn the on/off volume control clockwise to increase the volume, counterclockwise to decrease the volume. Adjusting the Sound Your radio emits a beep each time one of the buttons is pressed. Press them again to turn the sound back on. 9 Choosing a Channel and Privacy Code Your radio has 14 channels and 38 privacy codes (FRS 1600 series only) you can use to talk to others. In order to speak to someone, each of you must be set to the same channel and privacy code. Press the mode/scan button to move the w indicator to the channel mode. (The mode/scan button allows you to switch between channel and code mode on the FRS1600 series only. ) The FRS1600 series is equipped with a mode/scan button. Press the up or down button repeatedly to select one of the 14 channels. (The number on the LCD changes to indicate a new channel has been selected. ) To choose a channel on the FRS1400 series follow step 2 above. 11 Your radio also allows you to scan for active channels. Press and hold the mode/scan button for one second to begin scanning channels. If a signal is present, the radio will stop on the active channel for five seconds. To delete the current channel from being scanned, press the down button. The unit will immediately resume scanning for other channels. The memory for deleted channels is cleared each time the mode/scan button is pressed and held for one second or after the unit is turned off. 12 4. Press the PTT or MONI button to exit scan mode and stop at the current channel. [. . . ] Plug the optional VOX headset into the speaker/microphone jacks on the top of the unit. 18 3. Press and hold the call/vox button while turning the unit on to get into VOX mode. Press the mode/scan and call/vox buttons at the same time to go into VOX level control mode. Press the mode/scan or call/vox button to exit VOX level control mode. 19 Troubleshooting Problem No power Message not transmitted Solution · Reposition or replace batteries. [. . . ]
