User's Manual 4-23 L450/L450D Setting 1. Click Start -> Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Network and Sharing Center -> Connect to a network. Choose a wireless network from the available connection window and click Connect. You will need the name of the wireless network together with security settings. Consult the documentation accompanied with your router or ask your wireless network administrator for the settings. Security TOSHIBA strongly recommend that you enable encryption functionality, otherwise your computer will be open to illegal access by an outsider using a wireless connection. If this occurs, the outsider may illegally access your system, eavesdrop, or cause the loss or destruction of stored data. TOSHIBA is not liable for the loss of data due to eavesdropping or illegal access through the wireless LAN and the damage thereof. Wireless communication indicator The wireless communication indicator shows the status of the computer's wireless communication functions. If you used the Taskbar to disable the wireless LAN, restart the computer or perform the following procedure to re-enable it: Start -> Control Panel -> System and Security -> System -> Device Manager -> Network adapters and right click the wireless device then choose enable. 4-24 User's Manual L450/L450D LAN The computer has built-in support for Ethernet LAN (10 megabits per second, 10BASE-T) and Fast Ethernet LAN (100 megabits per second, 100BASE-TX). Do not install or remove a memory module while Wake-up on LAN is enabled. The Wake-up on LAN function consumes power even when the system is off. The Link speed (10/100 megabits per second) changes automatically depending on the network conditions (connected device, cable or noise, and so on). LAN cable types The computer must be configured properly before connecting to a LAN. Logging onto a LAN using the computer's default settings could cause a malfunction in LAN operation. If you are using Fast Ethernet LAN (100 megabits per second, 100BASE-TX), be sure to connect with a CAT5 cable or higher. If you are using Ethernet LAN (10 megabits per second, 10BASE-T), you can connect with a CAT3 or higher cable. Connecting the LAN cable To connect the LAN cable, follow the steps as detailed below: Connect the AC adaptor before connecting the LAN cable. If you disconnect the AC Adaptor while the computer is accessing a LAN, the system may hang up. Do not connect any power supplying device to the LAN cable that is connected to the LAN jack. Turn off the power to the computer and to all external devices connected to the computer. Press gently until you hear the latch click into place. When the computer is exchanging data with the LAN, the LAN Active indicator glows yellow. When the computer is connected to a LAN hub but is not exchanging data, the Link indicator glows. Disconnecting the LAN cable To disconnect the LAN cable, follow the steps as detailed below: Make sure the LAN Active indicator (amber LED) is out before you disconnect the computer from the LAN.
