To verify that the modem is set up properly, select the modem you wish to check, and then click Properties to bring up the dialog box with information specific to that modem. The Windows operating system communicates with the modem and displays identifying information reported by the modem. If the Windows operating system cannot communicate with the modem, it displays an error message. Consult the troubleshooting sections of your modem and Windows operating system documentation. Modem (Available on certain models) This section describes how to connect and disconnect the internal modem (available on certain models) to and from a telephone jack. NOTE The internal modem does not support voice functions. All data and fax functions are supported. In case of a lightning storm, unplug the modem cable from the telephone jack. Region selection Telecommunication regulations vary from one region to another, so you will need to make sure the internal modem's settings are correct for the region in which it will be used. 1 Click Start, All Programs, Toshiba, Networking, and then click Modem Region Select. Do not use the Country/Region Select function in the Modem setup utility in the Control Panel if the function is available. If you change the Country/Region in the Control Panel, the change may not take effect. Modem Selection If the computer cannot recognize the internal modem, a dialog box is displayed. Select the COM port for your modem to use. Dialing Properties Select this item to display the dialing properties. NOTE If you are using the computer in Japan, the Telecommunications Business Law requires that you select Japan region mode. It is illegal to use the modem in Japan with any other selection. Connecting the modem to a telephone line Your computer comes with a built-in modem (available on certain models) that can be connected to a standard voicegrade telephone line. Communicate with your office's local area network (LAN) or larger corporate wide area network (WAN). Before you can communicate using the modem, you need to connect it to a telephone line. Your computer's built-in modem port provides an RJ-11 jack, allowing you to connect the modem to a standard voice-grade telephone line.
