Check with your LAN administrator and hardware or software vendor before using or configuring a network connection. Additional memory module You can install optional memory module into the computer in order to increase the amount of system memory that is available. This section describes how to remove and install the memory modules. User's Manual 4-12 You should place a mat beneath the computer in order to prevent the computer's lid from becoming scratched or damaged when you are installing/replacing the memory module. In this instance you should avoid mats that are made of materials that hold or generate static electricity. When installing or removing a memory module, you must ensure that you do not touch any other internal areas of the computer. Do not try to install or remove a memory module under the following conditions. Be careful not to let screws or other foreign matter fall into the computer. Additional memory module is a precision electronic component that may be fatally damaged by static electricity. Since the human body can carry static electricity, it is important that you discharge yourself before touching or installing any additional memory modules. To discharge your body’s static electricity, simply touch any metal close to you with bare hands. Use a point size 0 Phillips screwdriver to remove and fasten the screws the use of an incorrect screwdriver can damage the screw heads. Removing a memory module To remove the memory module, follow the steps as detailed below: 1. Click Power in the Settings charm, and then click Shut down while holding down the SHIFT key - ensure that the Power indicator is off. Remove the AC adaptor and all cables and peripherals connected to the computer. Turn the computer upside down and remove the battery pack (refer to Replacing the battery pack section, if required). Loosen the screw securing the memory module cover in place. User's Manual 4-13 6. Slide your fingernail or a thin object under the cover and lift it off. Figure 4-5 Removing the memory module cover 2 1 1. Memory module cover Product appearance depends on the model you purchased. 7. 8. Lift the memory protection sheet. Push the latches away from the module in order to release it - a spring will force one end of the module up at an angle. If you use the computer for a long time, the memory modules and the circuits locating close to the memory modules will become hot. In this case, let them cool to room temperature before you replace them. Debris on the connectors may cause memory access problems. Figure 4-6 Removing the memory module 1 1 1. Latches Product appearance depends on the model you purchased. User's Manual 4-14 9. Seat the memory module cover in place and secure it with the screw. This is a normal protective feature designed to reduce the risk of lost data or damage to the product when used outside recommended conditions. To avoid risk of lost data, always make back-up copies of data by periodically storing it on an external storage medium.
