Advanced features
Inthischapterwewilldescribesomeoftheadvancedfeaturesintherouter. Thefollowingsectionsassumebasicknowledgeofcomputernetworking technologyandterminology. Static DHCP Bydefault, therouterdynamicallyassignsIPaddressestoallconnecteddevicesthroughtheDHCPprotocol. Thisisthemostuser-friendlymethod ofnetworkconfigurationbutitcanalsoleadtoIPaddressesthatchangeovertimeorwhenadevicereconnects. Incertaincasesthisisundesirable behaviour, forexamplewhenyouuseportforwardingitisnecessaryforthedevice'sIPaddresstoremainconstant. Onepossiblesolutionisto configureastaticIPaddressinthedeviceitselfbutthiscancauseproblemswhenyoualsousethedeviceonothernetworks. Anothersolutionisto instructtheroutertoalwaysassignthesameIPaddresstothedevice. ThisiscalledstaticDHCPorDHCPaddressreservation.
