[. . . ] The Limited Lifetime warranty covers a product during the Life of that Product, which is defined as the period of time during which the product is an 'Active' SMC product. A product is considered to be `Active' while it is listed on the current SMC price list. As new technologies emerge, older technologies become obsolete and SMC will, at its discretion, replace an older product in its product line with one that incorporates these newer technologies. At that point, the obsolete product is discontinued and is no longer an 'Active' SMC product. [. . . ] Network users and applications continue to demand bandwidth intensive software programs, graphically dense materials and desire faster speeds to the desktop. SMC EZ Switch 1000 meets that demand with its 4 port standards-based gigabit switch. This 1U rack mount or desktop switch seamlessly integrates with the rest of the network through its auto-negotiating, non-blocking design. With "Smart Features" to support VLAN, Priority Queing, Trunking and Failover, the SMC8504T is the most cost effect method for brining speed and service to the desktop. ABOUT THE EZ SWITCH 1000 SMC8504T The EZ Switch 1000 (SMC8504T) is an 4-port Giga Ethernet Switch. Its 4 10/100/1000BASE-TX ports deliver dedicated 10/100/1000Mbps links to each attached LAN segment all with conventional cabling and adapters. Auto-Negotiation is used to select the optional transmission speed and communication mode for each connection. With store-and-forward switching and flow control, maximum data integrity is always maintained, even under heavy loading. Easy installation and reliability make this plug-and-play switch an ideal choice for smooth Giga Fast Ethernet integration. Features and Benefits u u Full-duplex on all ports ANSI/ IEEE802. 3/ IEEE802. 3u/ IEEE802. 3z and IEEE802. 3ab compliance ensures compatibility with standards-based hubs, switches and cards from any vendor u u u Store-and-forward switching ensures error-free transmission Half- and full-duplex flow control prevents packets from being dropped under heavy loading Smart function: - support on console port for switch configuration change - support per port Port-based VLAN and L2 Trunking with link fail-over - support IEEE802. 1p four Priority queues on each port u u Plug and play Built-in wiring crossovers on all ports allow connections to servers and workstations to be made with straight-through cabling u u "At-a-glance" LEDs for port and system status monitoring Desktop and rack mountable INSTALLING THE EZ SWITCH 1000 The EZ Switch 1000 can be placed on a desktop or shelf, or installed in a standard 19-in equipment rack. Equipment Checklist After unpacking the EZ Switch 1000, check the contents of the box to be sure you've received the following components: l l l l l l EZ Switch 1000 SMC8504T Appropriate AC power cable RS 232 console port cable Rack mount bracket set SMC Warranty Registration Card This User Guide Selecting a Site Be sure to follow the site selection guidelines below when choosing a location: u Select a suitable location for the switch: l l l l It should be accessible for installing, cabling and maintaining the switch The temperature and humidity should be within the ranges listed in the specifications. There should be adequate space (approximately two inches) on all sides for proper air flow. u Before rack mounting the switch, pay particular attention to the following factors: l Temperature: Since the temperature within a rack assembly may be higher than the ambient room temperature, check that the rackenvironment temperature is within the specified operating temperature range. l l l Mechanical Loading: Do not place any equipment on top of a rack-mounted switch. Circuit Overloading: Be sure that the supply circuit to the rack assembly is not overloaded. Particular attention should be given to supply connections other than direct connections to the mains. u Make sure twisted-pair cable is always routed away from power lines, fluorescent lighting fixtures and other sources of electrical interference such as radio, transmitters, etc. u Make sure that a properly grounded power outlet is within 8 feet (2. 44 meters) of the switch and is powered from an independent circuit breaker. As with any equipment, using a filter or surge suppressor is recommended. Instructions 1. Positioning the Switch: For desktop or shelf mounting, attach the four adhesive foot pads to the bottom of the switch. For rack-mounting, attach the mounting brackets to both sides of the switch with the screws provided, then install the switch in the rack. 2. Applying Power: Plug one end of the power cable into the power receptacle at the back of the switch, and the other end into an appropriate electrical outlet. (Y/N) After finish flow control selection l "Please Wait" and configure another port or exit 3. Address Learning Aging Control A port's MAC address register is cleared on power-up, or hardware reset. If this item is enabled, the dynamically learned SA will be learned if it is not refreshed in less than the aging time. l Select "1" Aging Control [ E ] Enable [ D ] Disable Select: >> l Select "e" Max address-aging timer Max Aging time ( 1 10 minute) . . . 4. VLAN Setting VLAN Each port of the switch can be assigned to one or multiple VLANs (this device can be divided into 4 VLANs maximum). Frames from the source port will only be forwarded to destination ports within the same VLAN domain. A broadcast/ multicast frame will be forwarded to all ports. l Select: >> 2 VLAN Group 1, assigned ports >> [ S ] Port Select [ D ] Port Delete [ A ] Select All ports [ C ] Save [ E ] Exit Select: >> Queues Priority The switch can support priority either from tagged frame or based on the input ports. [. . . ] PCs can be connected to these ports with straight-through or crossover cable. Each port supports Auto-Negotiation, so the optimum communication mode (half or full duplex) and data rate (10 Mbps, 100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps) are selected automatically. Rear Panel The AC power receptacle is located on the rear panel of the switch 100-240VAC 50-60Hz Console RS-232 19200, N, 8, 1 TROUBLESHOOTING 1. Symptom Power LED does not light after power on. Probable Causes Power outlet or power cord may be defective. Possible Solutions l l l Check for loose connections Check the power outlet by using it for another device. [. . . ]
