SimpleTech USB flash drives work with virtually any Windows® or Macintosh® computer with a USB port, running Microsoft® Windows 98SE, ME, 2000, XP, and Mac 9. 2 and later. Whether you're at home, at work, or on the road, with a SimpleTech USB flash drive access to your data is at your fingertips. This quick start guide includes instructions on connecting and using the flash drive with Windows® and Apple® Macintosh® computers. You may also want to consult your computer's user manual to determine if there are any additional instructions related to the installation and use of USB devices. Windows ME, 2000 and XP No drivers are required. [. . . ] To access files on the drive, open My Computer to view the storage devices attached to your computer. Then, click on the flash drive's disk icon (the drive letter assigned to drive depends on the computer's hardware configuration). Viewing Files in Mac OS On Mac OS computers, the flash drive is represented by a drive icon on the desktop. To access files on the flash drive, double-click on the drive's desktop icon. 4 FORMATTING YOUR FLASH DRIVE SimpleTech USB flash drive's are formatted as a FAT volume at the factory--allowing you to format the drive and access files using standard Windows or Mac OS tools. For instructions on formatting drives, refer to the documentation provided with your operating system. Formatting the flash drive deletes all existing data on the drive. Formatting for Mac Use Only Mac users can get better performance by formatting the flash drive as a Mac OS Standard or Mac OS Extended volume. To format the drive in Mac OS X, do the following: 1 Open Disk Utility and select your flash drive. 3 Click the Erase button. Mac OS Standard and Mac OS Extended volumes cannot be accessed from Windows computers. After formatting flash drive for Mac OS, you can customize the Finder window for quick access to the files and folders on the drive. 5 DISCONNECTING YOUR FLASH DRIVE Repeatedly inserting and removing a USB device may stop the USB port from responding. Once the port is in this state, it will no longer recognize any USB device. While the computer is powered on, it is recommended that you stop the flash drive from running before unplugging it from your computer. Shutting Down the Flash Drive in Windows 1 In the System Tray, double-click the Safely Remove Hardware icon. 2 In the Safely Remove Hardware window that appears, select the flash drive, and then click Stop. 3 When Windows notifies you that it is safe to do so, unplug the flash drive from the computer's USB port. Shutting Down the Flash Drive in Mac OS 1 Double-click the flash drive's desktop icon. 2 In the Finder window that appears, click the flash drive's Eject button. 3 Unplug the flash drive from the computer's USB port.
