By now, you've connected your Internet player and created your MSN TV account; you're probably eager to start exploring. If you haven't set up your Internet player, use the instructions in the Setup Guide to get everything connected. In this guide, you'll explore the basics of using the MSN TV service. 2 3 Your MSN TV home page No matter where you go on MSN TV or on the Internet, if you want to get back to the home page, just press Home on your keyboard or remote control. Toward the bottom of the home page, you'll see links to Mail, Favorites, Messenger, Photos, Chat, and more. Use the left and right arrows on your keyboard or remote to see more links. The Using MSN TV center This is a great place to start your MSN TV adventure. Using MSN TV includes the MSN TV newsletter, Tips, Things to Try, and links to more information that will help you make the most of your MSN TV experience. Type a topic in the text box at the bottom of the page. 36 37 Creating a chat nickname Before you can begin chatting, you need to create a chat nickname, which other people see when you send messages to a chat room. To create your nickname Inside a chat room On the page that prompts you to create a nickname, choose Create Nickname. Type the nickname you want to create, and then choose Create. 1 2 Being in a chat room is a lot like being at a party. To whisper to someone When you first enter a chat room, you'll be prompted to create a nickname. If the name has already been chosen by someone else, you see a page that asks you to type in a different name or to choose a nickname from a list. Otherwise, you see a confirmation that your nickname has been created. There are lots of people talking. Usually, conversations move as fast as people can type. 1 2 3 While you're in a chat room, choose Whisper. Choose a person to whisper to. 3 1 2 Just like at a real party, you may want to whisper something to somebody without everybody hearing you. MSN TV allows you to send a personal message that won't appear to anyone else in the chat room. Unfortunately, sometimes there are people you just don't want to chat with. If you choose Ignore, you won't see the messages they send to the chat room. Type your message in the text box and choose Whisper Message. Note Although your whispered message appears in the main conversation page, only you and the person you're whispering to can see it. To ignore someone To change your nickname 1 2 While you're in a chat room, choose Ignore. Choose the box next to the nickname of the person you want to ignore, and then choose Ignore. You won't see the messages this person sends to the chat room. 38 39 Settings and Account 40 41 Settings and Account Settings and Account let you turn things on or off, make changes, or get information about your MSN TV service. You can also do things such as add a user, set user restrictions, and view your billing information. This section provides an overview of a few of the things you can do in Settings and Account. To learn more, choose Help from any page in Settings or Account. Adding users to your MSN TV account When you first signed up for MSN TV, you created an account. You can add up to 10 additional users to that same account at no charge. Each user gets their own e-mail address, password, contacts list for Messenger, Favorites list, and other personal settings. Choose Add a User and follow the instructions you see. 42 43 Setting user restrictions for a child Are you concerned about a child's use of the Internet?You can limit their access by setting user restrictions on their MSN TV account. You might want to make the text size larger for easier reading or smaller so that you can see more text on your screen at one time. You can also make Web pages easier to read by using the Resize Page key on your keyboard. To change the text size on Web pages 1 2 3 4 Sign in to MSN TV as the primary user. On the Account settings index page, choose Manage extra users. 1 2 In Settings, choose Web settings. A secure site electronically encrypts the information that you send, so that no one can "eavesdrop" on it. Here's how to determine if a site is secure · · Check to see that the Web address for the page begins with https (the s after the p stands for secure). Look for a padlock at the bottom of the screen when you're on the Web site. Helping avoid junk mail Junk e-mail, or spam, can be a big frustration, so you probably want to limit it as much as possible. There are several things you can do to help avoid spam.
