READ FIRST -- THEN DRIVE SAFELY Before driving your vehicle please read your Owner's Manual carefully. This will ensure familiarity with controls and maintenance requirements, assisting you in the safe operation of your vehicle. MODIFICATION OF YOUR VEHICLE This vehicle should not be modified. [. . . ] If the selector lever is not returned to P (Park) position, the key cannot be moved toward LOCK. When the key cannot be turned toward the LOCK position, proceed as follows to remove the key: Starting and driving 5-3 BEFORE ACTIVATING THE DRIVE MOTOR KEY POSITIONS The switch includes an anti-theft steering lock device. LOCK (Normal parking position) (0) The key can only be removed when the switch is in this position. OFF (1) The drive motor can be turned off without locking the steering wheel. ACC (Accessories) (2) This position activates electrical accessories such as the radio when the drive motor is not running. ON (Normal operating position) (3) This position turns on the drive motor system and the electrical accessories. ¼ Maintenance items listed here should be checked periodically, e. g. , each time you check coolant. All Nissan Altra EVs are equipped with unique high pressure, low rolling resistance Bridgestone Ecopia tires. These should be inflated to 304 kPa (3. 1 kg/cm2, 44 psi) per the tire manufacturers recommendations. ¼ Check the operation of warning lights when key is turned to the ON (3) position. ACTIVATING THE DRIVE MOTOR 1. (P is preferred. ) The shift lever cannot be moved out of P (Park) position and into any of the other gear positions if the key is removed from the switch. The drive motor is designed not to activate if the selector lever is in one of the driving positions. (b) Keep the key in the START position until the READY light on the meter illuminates. Do not step on the accelerator pedal when you are turning the key switch from ON to START. 5-4 Starting and driving DRIVING THE VEHICLE Shown on the following pages are the recommended operating procedures for the transaxle in your Altra EV. Follow these procedures for maximum vehicle performance and driving enjoyment. WARNING ¼ Do not depress the accelerator pedal while shifting from P or N to R or D. Failure to do so could cause you to lose control and have an accident. ¼ Operating the drive motor in the red zone of the motor revolution meter may cause serious drive motor damage. SSD0126 Starting the vehicle After activating the drive motor, fully depress the foot brake pedal. Be sure the vehicle is fully stopped before attempting to shift the selector lever. This transaxle is designed so that the foot brake pedal must be depressed before shifting from P (Park) position to any drive position while the key switch is ON. The shift lever cannot be moved out of P (Park) position and into any of the other gear positions if the key is removed from the switch. Release the parking brake and foot brake, then gradually start the vehicle in motion. Shifting WARNING ¼ Vehicle must be completely stopped when shifting from reverse to drive or drive to reverse, otherwise the accelerator will not respond and the READY light will blink. CAUTION When stopping the vehicle on an uphill grade, do not hold the vehicle by depressing the accelerator pedal. The foot brakes should be used for this purpose.
