Your cleaning will have been a success if the blue meter is over the line when time runs out or if you successfully remove all rock from the fossil. As soon as the red meter crosses the line, however, your cleaning will instantly be a failure and you will lose that fossil rock. You can clear away rock debris created by the drill by blowing on the microphone or pressing or repeatedly. Note: Rock debris can be cleared away by blowing very lightly on the microphone.
