System board cable connectors A ­ Diskette Drive Connector B ­ Primary IDE Connector C ­ Secondary IDE Connector D ­ Narrow SCSI Connector E ­ Wide SCSI Connector 4-44 Installing Options System board auxiliary cable connectors A ­ Serial Port B (COM2) Connector B ­ USB Connector C ­ Chassis Intrusion Alarm Connector D ­ System Fan Connector E ­ Not Used Diskette Drive Signal Cable A three-connector diskette drive signal cable comes attached to the system board and to the standard 1. 44-MB diskette drive. A second diskette drive can be connected to the middle connector on the diskette drive cable. Align the red edge of the cable with pin 1 (the notched end) on the drive connector. Installing Options 4-45 The following figure shows the three-connector diskette drive signal cable. If one of the cables is not used, it is provided with the system but not connected. If the IDE cable is not keyed with a connector tab, align the colored edge of the cable with the pin 1 side of the drive connector. IDE cable A ­ Connects to System Board IDE Port B ­ Connects to IDE Device Installing Options 4-47 Internal SCSI Device Cables Systems that have an internal SCSI device also come with either a six-connector 68-pin SCSI device cable or a fourconnector 50-pin SCSI device cable. The cables can connect internal SCSI devices to the 68-pin and/or the 50-pin internal connectors on the system board. The unused connectors on the cable are terminated. SCSI device cable A ­ Connects to System Board B ­ Connect to SCSI Devices 4-48 Installing Options PC Card Adapter Cable Two PCMCIA-compliant cables come with the PC card adapter available in some systems. The cables are bound together, and connect to the dual PCMCIA ports on the PC adapter board and the connectors on the back of the PC card adapter. System Power Cables Power cables come from the power supply and are attached to the standard storage devices. System power cables vary in length and provide connector sizes to accommodate a variety of supported storage configurations. The following figure shows the power cable connectors. Your computer supports four types of cabled storage devices: T IDE devices -- includes hard drive, Zip drive, tape backup unit, or CD-ROM drive T diskette drive -- 1. 44-MB drive T PC card adapter (with a PC adapter card) T SCSI devices. IDE Drive Cabling The following procedure describes how to cable an IDE drive. Note: The appearance of your device may vary from the one shown. 1. Locate an available power connector coming from the power supply. 4-50 Installing Options 3. Connect the appropriate power cable to the power connector on the IDE drive. If you are installing a CD-ROM drive and your system has speakers, connect the audio cable to the CD In connector on the sound board (see the instructions that come with the drive). Installing Options 4-51 Diskette Drive Cabling The following procedure explains how to cable a diskette drive. Connect the diskette drive signal cable connector to the signal connector on the diskette drive. Connect the power cable to the power connector on the device. PC Card Adapter Cabling The following procedure describes how to cable a PC card adapter. Connect the connectors at one end of the cable set to the PC adapter board. See "Installing an Expansion Board" if the board must be installed first. ) The connectors are keyed to fit only one way. Connect the connectors at the other end of the cable set to the connectors at the rear of the PC card adapter. 4-52 Installing Options Internal SCSI Device Cabling To connect an internal SCSI device, perform the following steps: 1.
