Detailed instructions for use are in the User's Guide.

[. . . ] A Versatile, Highly Serviceable PC POWERMATE ES SERIES ® USER'S GUIDE Proprietary Notice and Liability Disclaimer The information disclosed in this document, including all designs and related materials, is the valuable property of NEC Computers Inc. NECC and/or its licensors, as appropriate, reserve all patent, copyright and other proprietary rights to this document, including all design, manufacturing, reproduction, use, and sales rights thereto, except to the extent said rights are expressly granted to others. The NECC product(s) discussed in this document are warranted in accordance with the terms of the Warranty Statement accompanying each product. However, actual performance of each such product is dependent upon factors such as system configuration, customer data, and operator control. [. . . ] Leave boards and chips in their antistatic packaging until ready to be installed. Dissipate static electricity before handling any system components (boards, chips, memory modules) by touching a grounded metal object, such as the system's unpainted metal chassis. If possible, use antistatic devices, such as wrist straps and floor mats. ! ! Always hold a chip or board by its edges. When installing a cable, route the cable so it is not pinched by other components and is out of the path of the system unit covers. Prevent damage to the connectors by aligning connector pins before you connect the cable. Misaligned connector pins can cause damage to system components at power-on. ! ! ! ! When disconnecting a cable, always pull on the cable connector or strain-relief loop, not on the cable itself. Installing Options 4-3 System Unit Covers The following sections describe how to remove and replace the system unit cover and the front panel. See "Removing the Cover. " Remove the front panel to install or replace a 3 1/2-inch accessible device, a 5 1/4-inch accessible device, or a 3 1/2-inch internal device. The chassis shell (the U-shaped metal covering with rubber feet on two sides) should only be removed by authorized service personnel. The parts that are accessed from this panel must be removed or repaired by authorized service personnel only. Removing the Cover Before installing optional hardware inside your system, you must first remove the cover from the system unit. Before removing the cover, turn off system power and unplug the system power cable. Disconnect any external options (such as a keyboard and monitor) from the front or rear of the system unit. Electrostatic discharge can damage computer components. Discharge static electricity by touching a metal object before removing the cover. 3. 5. If the system unit is in the upright (minitower) position, place it on its right side (the side with four rubber feet). If you have a padlock in the locking tab on the rear of the chassis, remove it. Remove the two thumbscrews holding the cover to the rear of the chassis (see the following figure). 4-4 Installing Options Locating the cover screws A Cover B Cover Screws 6. 7. C Locking Tab Grasp the handle on the cover and slide the cover towards the rear of the chassis about an inch. Detach the cover from the tabs and slots along the edges of the chassis, and then lift it off the system. Releasing the cover Installing Options 4-5 Replacing the Cover Replace the cover as follows. Ensure that all cables inside the chassis are positioned to prevent crimping, abrasion, or cutting while installing the cover. Check that the ribbon cables are folded along their fold lines and out of the direct path of the cover. 1. Position the cover over the side of the chassis so that the back edge of the cover is about an inch beyond the back edge of the chassis (see the following figure). Align the tabs and slots on the cover with those along the edges of the chassis. Align the locking tab slot at the bottom rear of the cover with the locking tab. 2. 3. Aligning the cover A Side Slots and Tabs B Locking Tab (hidden) C Front Slots and Tabs 4-6 Installing Options 4. Firmly press the cover against the chassis and slide the cover towards the front of the chassis until it locks in place. Note If the cover does not slide all the way to the front of the chassis, check that the cover tabs at the front of the cover are properly inserted into their slots in the chassis. Also check that the locking tab is inserted into its slot on the back edge of the chassis. 5.
