Using a USB 1. 1 port instead of a USB 2. 0 port means a slower transmission speed. The external SATA connection offers a faster transmission speed than through USB. Formatting a partition erases all data on the partition and allows you to start with a clean drive. [. . . ] ANSWER: This may occur because Windows is trying to access a file that is in the external hard drive. Make sure that none of the files on the disk are open when you unplug the drive.
