A bottom of firm sand, gravel, shell, or hard clay returns a fairly wide signal. If the automatic sensitivity isoffand thesignal narrows down, then itmeansthat you have moved over a mud bottom. Astheboatpasses overthe mudbottom, theX-30will automatically increasethe sensitivityto maintain agood bottomsignal. Thesensitivity barwill helpyou indetermining ifthe bottom Issoftor hard. If it increaseswhileinthesame depth ofwater, then the boat hasmoved overa softbottom. lfitdecreases, thenitisovera hard bottom. Of course, as the water depth increases or decreases, the sensitivity will also change. To adjustthesensitivity whilethe X-30 is in theautomatic mode, simplypress the right arrowkeyto Increase it. Ifthevaluegoesbelow theminimum required to the the bottom signal, the X-30's audible tone will sound an alert. As you press the £LNSJ V (VIT -- Simulated Pictures Bigrocksor stumpsonasmooth bottomsend backsignalsabove the bottom level signal. As you passover a post, it will be clearly visible as a short line extending above the bottom signal. Asteep slopereturns awidesignal, the steeperthe wider.
