If an unstable condition occurs - a sudden evasive movement for example - ESC intervenes within fractions of a second via the engine computer and brake system and attempts to stabilize the vehicle. 4 32 Driving your vehicle ESC operation off ESC OFF state ESC ESC operation, OFF · To cancel ESC OFF button press the (ESC OFF indicator light illuminates). · If the ignition switch is turned to LOCK position when ESC is off, ESC remains off. Upon restarting the engine, the ESC will automatically turn on again. ESC indicator light (blinks) ESC ESC OFF indicator light (comes on) ESC OFF Indicator light When ignition switch is turned to ON, the indicator light illuminates, then goes off if ESC system is operating normally. ESC OFF indicator light comes on when either the ESC is turned off with the button, or ESC malfunctions when turned on. WARNING - ESC The Electronic Stability Control system is only a driving aid; use precautions for safe driving by slowing down on curved, snowy, or icy roads. Don't attempt to accelerate excessively just because the ESC indicator light is blinking. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 4 33 Driving your vehicle NOTICE · When measuring the vehicle speed with a chassis dynamo-meter, make sure the ESC is turned off (ESC OFF light illuminated). If the ESC is left on, it may prevent the vehicle speed from increasing, and cause a false diagnosis of a faulty speedometer. · Turning the ESC off does not affect ABS or brake system operation. ESC OFF usage 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 When driving · It's a good idea to keep the ESC turned on for daily driving whenever possible. · To turn ESC off while driving, press the ESC OFF button while driving on a flat road surface. Never press ESC OFF button while ESC is operating (ESC indicator light blinks). If ESC is turned off while ESC is operating, the vehicle may slip out of control. WARNING - ESC Never press the ESC OFF button while ESC is operating. If the ESC is turned off while ESC is operating, the vehicle may slip out of control. Fuel gauge 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 OKM029095C 4 35 Driving your vehicle GAUGES Speedometer Fuel gauge The fuel gauge indicates the approximate amount of fuel remaining in the fuel tank. The fuel gauge is supplemented by a low fuel warning light, which will illuminate when the fuel tank is near empty. On inclines or curves, the fuel gauge pointer may fluctuate or the low fuel warning light may come on earlier than usual due to the movement of fuel in the tank. The speedometer indicates the forward speed of the vehicle. CAUTION Avoid driving with a very low fuel level. If you run out of fuel, it could case the engine to misfire and result in excessive loading of the catalytic converter. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Tachometer The tachometer indicates the approximate number of engine revolutions per minute (rpm). Use the tachometer to select the correct shift points and to prevent lugging and/or over-revving the engine. [. . . ] If braking performance is impaired, dry the brakes by applying them lightly while maintaining a slow forward speed. Aluminum wheel maintenance The aluminum wheels are coated with a clear protective finish. · Do not use any abrasive cleaner, polishing compound, solvent, or wire brushes on aluminum wheels. · Use only a mild soap or neutral detergent, and rinse thoroughly with water. It may damage and corrode the aluminum wheels coated with a clear protective finish. 7 52 Maintenance INTERIOR CARE Interior general precautions Prevent caustic solutions such as perfume and cosmetic oil from contacting the dashboard because they may cause damage or discoloration.
