[. . . ] Solving Computer Problems 41 Troubleshooting The main window bitmap in the ThinkPad Configuration program is distorted (Windows NT only). Installing the Active Desktop, bundled with Internet Explorer Version 4. 0 on Windows NT, might cause this problem. (Merely disabling the Active Desktop is not effective to avoid the problem. ) Close the ThinkPad Configuration program and start it again. (This is a temporary recovery. ) While you are installing Windows 95, screen color becomes abnormal. After you reboot, the Startup screen appears with "Safe mode" selected. When you see the screen message "Cannot detect devices in Safe Mode, " click OK. When you see the screen message "Windows is running in Safe mode, " press OK. On the desktop, click the right mouse button to show the Display Properties window. Reboot the system. Other problems Problem The computer locks or does not accept any input. Cause and action Your computer might lock when it enters standby mode during a communication operation. To turn off the computer, press and hold the power switch for 4 seconds or more. If the standby indicator is on and you are working under battery power, replace the battery with a fully charged one or change your power source to ac power. If you still have a problem, press and hold the power switch for 4 seconds or more; this forces the computer to turn off. Chapter 5. Solving Computer Problems 43 Troubleshooting The computer does not start from a device you want, such as a diskette drive. Refer to the Startup menu of the IBM BIOS Setup Utility. Make sure that the startup sequence in the IBM BIOS Setup Utility is set so that the computer starts from the device you want. Make sure that the device from which the computer starts is enabled by checking there is no !mark preceding the device name. The computer does not respond. IRQs for the PCI are all set as 11.
