[. . . ] Solving computer problems 21 Hardware troubleshooting Standby or hibernation problems Problem The computer enters standby mode automatically. The computer enters standby mode immediately after POST (the standby indicator turns on). The critical low-battery error appears, and the computer immediately turns off. The LCD remains blank after you take action to return from a sleep mode. Cause and action If the processor reaches a temperature that is too high, the computer will automatically enter standby mode to allow the computer to cool and to protect the processor and other internal components. Connect the ac adapter to the computer, or replace the battery pack with a fully charged one. Check whether the external monitor was disconnected while the computer was in standby mode. Do not disconnect the external monitor while the computer is in standby mode or hibernation mode. If no external monitor is attached when the computer resumes, the LCD remains blank and output is not displayed. The computer automatically enters standby or hibernation mode when the battery is depleted. Do one of the following: Replace the battery pack with a fully charged one and press Fn. Connect the ac adapter to the computer, and press Fn. The computer does not return from standby mode, or the standby indicator stays on and the computer does not work. 22 IBM ThinkPad A20 User's Reference Hardware troubleshooting Problem When you are using the port replicator, resuming normal operation from hibernation or standby mode takes a long time. Cause and action If the Ethernet port is enabled, but the port replicator is not connected to a network, resuming operation can take a long time. The computer queries the Ethernet until the timeout timer stops the query. If you are not using the network, disable the Ethernet connector as follows: For Windows 98: 1. Restart the computer by turning it off and on again. Check whether any option has been selected to disable your computer from entering standby or hibernation mode. Chapter 3. Solving computer problems 23 Hardware troubleshooting Problem The computer does not enter standby mode as set by the timer under Windows 98 or Windows NT. Cause and action For Windows 98: The generic CD-ROM or DVD-ROM driver for Windows 98 accesses the internal CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive every 3 seconds to see whether a CD-ROM is inserted in the CD-ROM drive or the DVD-ROM drive. This prevents your computer from entering standby mode even after a timeout. Clear the Auto insert notification check box. Windows 98 no longer detects a CD-ROM or a DVD-ROM automatically. For Windows NT: If you enable the CD-ROM AutoRun feature, the computer does not enter standby mode through the timer. To enable the timer in this situation, edit the configuration information in the registry as follows: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE¥SYSTEM¥ CurrentControlSet¥Services¥Cdrom¥ Autorun: x1 > Autorun: 24 IBM ThinkPad A20 User's Reference Hardware troubleshooting Problem The Fn+F12 key combination does not make the computer enter hibernation mode. Cause and action Enable hibernation mode as follows: For Windows 98: 1. Click the Create Now button. The computer cannot enter hibernation mode if you are using one of the IBM communication PC Cards. To enter hibernation mode, stop the communication program, and then remove the PC Card or disable the PC Card slot, using the Control Panel. For Windows NT: Note: You must format your hard disk with the FAT format system to use hibernation mode in Windows NT. [. . . ] Repairs to certified equipment should be made by an authorized Canadian maintenance facility designated by the supplier. Any repairs of alterations made by the user to this equipment, or equipment malfunctions, may give the telecommunications company cause to request the user to disconnect the equipment. Users should ensure for their own protection that the electrical ground connections of the power utility, telephone lines and internal metallic water pipe system, if present, are connected together. This precaution may be particularly important in rural areas. Caution Users should not attempt to make such connections themselves, but should contact the appropriate electric inspection authority, or electrician, as appropriate. [. . . ]
