This User's Guide contains information for setting up, installing options, and preparing applications to run on your computer. This book also contains information regarding everyday use and solving problems. You can find the most current information about your computer at http://www. ibm. com/pc/support/ on the IBM Web site. Start the computer Set up the computer Did the computer start correctly? No Go to the Solving Problems chapter Yes Do you plan to use Windows 2000 or Windows XP? No Install another operating system Complete the setup program System is ready to use. [. . . ] Review the following information before connecting power and signal cables to internal drives: · The drives that are preinstalled in your computer come with power and signal cables attached. If you replace any drives, remember which cable is attached to which drive. When you install a drive, ensure that the drive connector at the end of the signal cable is connected to the drive and that the drive connector at the other end is connected to the system board. If two IDE devices are used on a single cable, one must be designated as the primary device and the other as the secondary device; otherwise, the computer might not recognize some of the IDE devices. The primary and secondary designation is determined by switch or jumper settings on each IDE device. If two IDE devices are on a single cable, and only one is a hard disk drive, the hard disk drive must be set as a primary device. Chapter 5. Installing options · · · 69 · If you have only one IDE device on a cable, it must be set as a primary device. Installing memory modules Adding memory to your computer is an easy way to make programs run faster. You can increase the amount of memory in your computer by installing memory modules. Your IntelliStation E Pro computer uses industry-standard dual inline memory modules (DIMMs). Do the following to install a DIMM: Attention: When handling static-sensitive devices, take precautions to avoid damage from static electricity. For details on handling these devices, see "Handling static-sensitive devices" on page 37. Review the safety precautions listed in the "Safety information" on page vii. Disconnect all external cables and power cords; then remove the cover. Touch the static-protective package containing the DIMM to any unpainted metal surface on the computer. Turn the DIMM so that the pins align correctly with the connector. 70 IBM® IntelliStation® E Pro: User's Guide 7. Firmly press the DIMM straight down into the connector by applying pressure on both ends of the DIMM simultaneously. The retaining clips snap into the locked position when the DIMM is firmly seated in the connector. DIMM connector 1 DIMM connector 2 DIMM connector 3 8. If a gap exists between the DIMM and the retaining clips, the DIMM has not been correctly installed. Turn on the attached devices, and turn on the computer. Installing a security U-bolt To help prevent theft, you can add a security U-bolt and cable to your computer. Review the safety precautions listed in "Safety information" on page vii. Disconnect all external cables and power cords; then remove the cover. Insert the U-bolt through the rear panel; then attach and tighten the nuts. Chapter 5.
