City Driving
Here are ways to increase your safety in city driving:
0
Know the best way to getto where you are trip going. Get a city map and plan your into an unknown part of the city just as you would for a cross-country trip. (See the next part, "Freeway Driving. ")
a Try to use the freeways that rim and crisscross most
0
Treat a green light as a warning signal. A traffic light is there because the corner is busy enough to need it. When a lightturns green, and just before you start to move, check both ways for vehicles that have not cleared the intersection or may be running the red light.
One of the biggest problems with city streets is the amount of traffic on them. You'll want to watch out for what the other drivers are doing and pay attention to traffic signals.
4-19
Freeway Driving
The most important advice on freeway driving is: Keep up with traffic and keep to the right. If you havea clear view of the freeway as you drive along the entrance ramp, you should beginto check traffic. Switch on your turn signal, check your mirrors andglance over your shoulder as often as necessary. Once you are on the freeway, adjust your speed to the posted limit or to the prevailing rate if it's slower. Then use your turn signal.
Mile for mile, freeways (also called thruways, parkways, expressways, turnpikes or superhighways) are the safest of all roads. But they have their own special rules.
Just before you leave the lane, glance quickly over your shoulder to make sure there isn't another vehicle in your "blind" spot.
4-20
Once you are moving on the freeway, make certain you allow a reasonable following distance. When you want toleave the freeway, move to the proper lane well in advance. If you miss yourexit, do not, under any circumstances, stop and back up. Reduce your speed according to your speedometer, not to your sense of motion. After driving for any distance at higher speeds, you may tendto think you are going slower than youactually are.

Highway Hypnosis
Is there actually such a conditionas "highway hypnosis"?Cl a Or is it just plain falling asleep at the wheel?l it highway hypnosis, lack of awareness, whatever. or
There is something about an easy stretch of road with the Same scenery, along with the hum of the tires on the road, the drone of the engine, and the rush of the wind against the vehicle that can make you sleepy. If it does, your vehicle can leave the road in less than a second, and you could crash and be injured. [. . . ] Some state laws may require you to use this program before filing a claim with a state-run arbitration program or in the courts. Forfurther information, contact the BBB at 1-800-955-5100 or the GMC Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-GMC-8782 (1-800-462-8782).
REPORTING SAFETY DEFECTS TO THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT
If you believe that your vehicle has defect which could a cause a crash or could cause injury or death, you should immediately informthe National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in addition to notifying General Motors. If NHTSA receives similar complaints, it may open an investigation, and if it finds that a safety defect exists in a group of vehicles, it may order a recall and remedy campaign. However, NHTSAcannot become involved in individual problems between you, your dealer or General Motors. [. . . ]
