. . . . . . . . . . 235 7 Egypt Welcomes You S tanding on the hot, arid sand, you look towards the little settlement that you call home. In the background, the mighty Nile flows by, and along its muddy banks all manner of vegetation grows, even some small farms that some in your city have planted. Your family has lived and died along the river for generations, eking out an existence from what the land has to offer. [. . . ] Once there are at least 400 bricks stored in the city's Storage Yards, peasants drag a sledge loaded with the material to the bricklayers at the construction site. Each load of bricks is enough for one course of one section of the Mastaba. The number of courses and the number of sections in each course varies with the size of the monument. Info-click on the Mastaba at any time for a progress report on the project. Monuments Pyramids Pyramids are the largest and most complex structures you will build. They require a large amount of empty land and take years to construct. But, with the right amount of raw materials and brute labor, your Pyramid will soon reach towards the sky. In addition to the Pyramid, the Complex includes a Mortuary Temple, a Valley Temple and a Causeway. At the Mortuary Temple, located on the eastern face of the Pyramid, the deceased is worshiped and offerings are made to ease his existence in the afterlife. The long Causeway connecting the Valley Temple in the east to the Mortuary Temple in the west 135 Pyramid Construction. Now, stonemasons are awaiting delivery of stone to continue Pyramid construction. 136 Monuments represents the deceased's journey from the living world to the world of the dead and mimics the journey of the sun. In the Valley Temple, located on the Nile, the deceased's body is prepared for his journey. The tomb is cut into the center of the Pyramid. Phase II: Constructing the Pyramid After the site is prepared, construction workers move in to build the Pyramid, laying stones or bricks. With the exception of Stepped Pyramids, all Pyramids have an outer casing of fine limestone. When they are ready, construction workers from the city's construction guilds move to the Pyramid site and wait for a delivery. Whenever a Storage Yard accumulates the required raw material, peasants load the material on a sledge and drag it to the construction site. As long as your city has enough peasant laborers, the necessary construction guilds and supplies of raw materials, Pyramid construction will continue. They build the ramps that allow peasants and construction workers to scale the sides of the Pyramid. Ordinary deliverymen from a Storage Yard or Wood Cutter provide the Carpenters Guild with wood. Info-click on the Pyramid to check in with the Construction Foreman. Phase III: Finishing the Outer Casing To finish the Pyramid, stonemasons smooth the outer limestone layer so that the Pyramid glistens white in the sun. As its name implies, the Stepped Pyramid does not undergo this finishing phase. Pyramid Types When Pharaoh Djoser first asks your family to help Vizier Imhotep build a Pyramid, you'll have little idea what to expect. Imhotep describes his vision for a mammoth tomb that reaches toward the sun. As generations pass and forebears pass their knowledge to their successors, the vision of the Pyramid changes. [. . . ] Hyksos: sometimes called the Asiatics, the Hyksos ruled Lower Egypt for about 100 years during the Second Intermediate Period. During their rule, they introduced new musical instruments and new military accouterments, including the horse-drawn chariot. inundation: the annual flood of the Nile that refertilized the farmland in its floodplain. Peasants were generally called to work on state projects during the inundation. [. . . ]
