Detailed instructions for use are in the User's Guide.

[. . . ] Adjacent track seeks and instantaneous seeks are often achieved since often dll and other data files are called upon by programs in alphabetical order. 2. Recency With this option you get extensive flexibility in ordering files based upon last access dates or modify dates then extensive flexibility in placement of these files. This method is suited perfectly for drives that may consist exclusively of data files as in a file server situation. [. . . ] Please Note: Some antivirus programs and desktop search and indexing programs update the Last Access times of files that they scan and index. Technically this contravenes Microsoft's suggested practice for updating Last Access time stamps since it is not a true "normal use" access. Step one: First select the Drive, then Options to modify the High Performance and Archive files. Here you can go with Automatic, as well, for both HighPerf and Archive with 10 days or newer for HighPerf And 30 days or older for Archive One can Select file Types under Archive as zip, cab, avi, dat, vob, wmv, txt . . . For the High Performance files For the Archives Note: If we check the pic above and the one for HighPerf, we will see that I had added "C:\Windows\PChealth" for both Archive and HighPerf. . . Probably would get the Application MAD as to what to do with those files. . . Just made a note to make sure that we dont perform a silly mistake like this. Archive some of those extraneous Windows XP update files that will never be used again. Look in your Windows folder you will see about 70 folders beginning with $ - these are updates that will never be required again. That's all! Now just give it some time alone with our PC After completion mine looked something like this. . . Suitable Method For A Typical Home Desktop Computer To obtain the best performance for a typical everyday home desktop computer, we suggest a routine such as this on a weekly basis: Archive Files that have not been accessed in the past 30 days or more. Include file types with . ZIP extension Include file types for other "archive" data this may include photo collections, videos or anything else of that nature Fast Archival ON High Performance: Select the following folders in this order. (remember we can drag the files to change their order) Windows Documents and Settings Any Games That We May Use Program Files Any Data Directories That We Frequently Use This will place data that we rarely access, zip files and other archive file extension types to the inner tracks and out of the way and place your most used files to the outer tracks for rapid OS performance, Program launching and data file loading. Select the Respect Archive and High Performance and then use any of the first four defrag methods. The Consolidate option may be all that we require and will give us the shortest Defrag times since, after it takes care of the "respect" options, simply consolidates the data together in no particular order and filling holes in the data and tightly compacting it. An even faster Defrag can be performed if you select Recency - Last Modified and Option 1 Move Data to Outer Tracks Oldest Data Most Outer and turn OFF high performance. This will sort files in the order they were last modified and therefore system files will pretty much stay in place and only recently changed data files will be defragged and repositioned. On a daily basis we can simply perform a Fragmented Files Only defrag to keep our files defragmented. FAQs How many drives can I defrag simultaniously? Theoritically, there is no limit. But based on performance recommendation is not more than 2 drives at a time. How long should a defrag run take? That is a function of fragmentation degree, the amount of data on your drive and the amount of data that needs to be moved and defragged. [. . . ] For a more comprehensive method that is fast and also consoldiates free space use the Consolidate option. In this circumstance it is also important that you archive files that have not been used for X number of days to better compact the data you are using regularly. What single Defrag method will give me the fastest over-all system performance? That depends primarily on the type of use that the PC is primarily used for. In a desktop/workstation scenario - performing a Folder/Filename method will give your system that fastest overall performance. [. . . ]
