If the hard drive is your boot device, ensure that the drive is installed, properly seated, and partitioned as a boot device. S E C T O R N O T F O U N D -- The operating system cannot locate a sector on the hard drive. Run the Windows error-checking utility to check the file structure on the hard drive. If a large number of sectors are defective, back up the data (if possible), and then reformat the hard drive. S E E K E R R O R -- The operating system cannot find a specific track on the hard drive. S H U T D O W N F A I L U R E -- A chip on the system board may be malfunctioning. TIME -O F - D A Y C L O C K L O S T P O W E R -- System configuration settings are corrupted. [. . . ] A virus program moves from one computer to another through an infected disk, software downloaded from the Internet, or e-mail attachments. A common type of virus is a boot virus, which is stored in the boot sectors of a floppy disk. If the floppy disk is left in the drive when the computer is shut down and then turned on, the computer is infected when it reads the boot sectors of the floppy disk expecting to find the operating system. If the computer is infected, the boot virus may replicate itself onto all the floppy disks that are read or written in that computer until the virus is eradicated. [. . . ]
