If, for any reason, the unit stops sensing your engine's revs, SmartMuteTM will indicate an error and automatically turn off. The rev point you set will be stored in the unit's memory when power is turned off, and recalled each time the power is turned on. The rev point must be reset if you use your ESD-9160 in a different vehicle. Important: When initially choosing your SmartMuteTM activation point, a setting of approximately 300 to 600 RPMs above idle is recommended. You can reset the activation point at any time to fit your individual preferences and driving style. Setting the SmartMuteTM Activation Point Your ESD-9160 must be installed in your vehicle. You will hear a series of beeps as you follow these steps: 1. Procedure Press and hold the SMARTMUTETM button for 2 seconds. Tone 2 beeps Visual Display none X K Ka V/S N WE S 2. Procedure Rev your engine to the level you wish to set. Rev the engine slightly above idle and hold revs steady for 2 seconds. NOTE: If the unit is unable to sense usable pulses within three seconds, SmartMuteTM will indicate an error and automatically turn off. NOTE: If you do not set a rev point within 20 seconds of beginning these steps, SmartMuteTM will indicate an error and automatically turn off. Tone 3 beeps Visual Display all three bars flash three times Tone 1 beep Visual Display appears 10 11 3 O P E R AT I O N · S E T T I N G S ® O P E R AT I O N · S E T T I N G S 3 VG-2 Alert Audio Setting The ESD-9160 is undetectable by police VG-2 detection devices, and will alert you when such a device is in use near your vehicle. You can choose whether or not you want your unit to sound VG-2 alerts. DIM button Press and hold for 2 seconds Compass Your ESD-9160 includes an internal 8-point compass that will continuously display your current direction of travel: N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, or NW. The compass will remainNaccurately calibrated as long as your ESD-9160 is mounted in the same place in your vehicle. If you change the location where the unit is mounted or move it to another vehicle, you must recalibrate the N compass. N Calibrating the Compass Important: Before using it for the first time, you must calibrate the compass to provide accurate indications of direction. Calibration allows the compass electronics to measure and store information about the N magnetic fields generated by your vehicle. Procedure Tone 1 beep Visual Display V/S will blink once in the display The compass temporarily may not provide accurate readings if you are inside a building or enclosure, or are close to a large metal tractor/trailer, truck, or train. Once E you are away from such a location, the compassEwill work correctly again. S Tone 1 beep Visual Display directional display begins flashing clockwise S W N E S W N N E S E To turn off VG-2 audio alert While no signal is being detected, press and hold the DIM button for two seconds. While no signal is being detected, press and hold the DIM button for two seconds again. 1. Procedure Press and hold the CITY button for at least 2 seconds. W N E S W N E S To turn on VG-2 audio alert 2 beeps V/S will blink twice in the display. 2. X K Ka V/S N WE S Procedure Within 60 seconds, drive your vehicle in a circle twice, then press the CITY button again. E S Tone 2 beeps Visual Display directional display flashes twice, then shows the direction of travel W N E S W N E S W W NOTE: If you do not press the CITY button the second time within 60 seconds, compass calibration will automatically terminate. Tone 3 beeps S W Visual Display directional display flashes twice, no direction of travel is shown W N E S W N E S 12 S 13 4 DETECTION Type of Signal DETECTION Visual Display X plus signal strength K plus signal strength Ka plus signal strength 4 Signals Detected The tables on the following pages show you the types of signals your ESD-9160 will detect, as well as the visual alerts it provides for each one. During laser alerts the letter "L" will appear, instead of the signal strength indication. X K Ka V/S W N E S Radar X band radar K band radar Ka band radar Audio Alerts A distinctly different alert tone is used for each type of signal detected (including separate tones for each laser signal). For X, K, and Ka band radar signals, the tones will repeat faster as you approach the signal source. The repeat rate of the tones gives you useful information about the signal detected.
