[. . . ] Application Profile Market: Orthopedic Medical Implant Devices Application Description: Removing casting scale and minor defects from the side of knees (robotic application) 241571 Key Application Requirements Remove casting scale and minor surface defects from cobalt chrome knees using robotics, while leaving a consistent, high quality finish. PRODUCT 3MTM TrizactTM CF Belt, grade A160 3MTM TrizactTM Belt 307EA, grade A65 A16 3MTM TrizactTM Belt 217EA, grade A65 A16 Products Replaced Competitive ceramic-based J weight conventional coated abrasive belts in grade P120. Advantages/Benefits To Customer Consistent, improved finishes 3M Trizact CF Belt features a macroreplicated matrix of resin and aluminum oxide mineral on a flexible X weight cloth backing. The structure is designed to break down under moderate to high grinding pressure, exposing fresh mineral to the grinding/polishing interface. [. . . ] The remaining gate is removed using coated abrasives before the part goes to the finishing/polishing department. The condyles and patella track on each knee are first machined using diamond wheels, to remove any remaining witness line from the gates and sides of the knee. The sides of the knee, often referred to as the "C" area, have historically been finished using a conventional coated abrasive, either off-hand on a "backstand" or (more commonly) utilizing robotics. When robotics systems are used, the cell typically consists of four belt heads. The first head is used to remove casting scale and any minor defects from the sides of the knee, the toughest abrasive application in the system. As a means of improving performance, ceramic-based conventional abrasives are commonly used on this first head. Even with ceramicbased conventional abrasives, this head typically produces only 1/5 the number of parts per belt than the other three belt heads. In these operations, using Trizact CF Belt in grade A160 on the first abrasive head can increase the belt life on the first head significantly, more closely matching the belt life on the other three belt heads.
